The debate in Denmark concerning Charles Darwin’s theory of evolution was not all serious. When Darwin became a household name among the Danes in the 1870s, poets and cartoonists were quick to ridicule his theory. Particularly his theory that man shared a common ancestor with the apes brought out smiles.
