Frederik Vilhelm August Meinert (1833-1912)

Curator at the Zoological Museum 1880-1910, MA theology 1857, DSc 1863, assistant at the Zoological Museum 1870-1880, entomologist.

Like his mentor, professor of zoology Japetus Steenstrup, Frederik Meinert was critical of the theory of evolution. In his argumentation against evolution, it was not his theological background which determined his stance. Rather, he pointed to what he regarded as lacking evidence of the theory. On 3 April 1872, in the conservative newspaper Fædrelandet he attacked J.P. Jacobsen for uncritically accepting the Darwinian assertion that birds descended from reptiles. This resulted in a short polemic with Jacobsen.
